Sangeslust – A Unique Celebration of the Human Voice

27. September 2012 1 Kommentar

by Florian Städtler, Vocal Blog

I’m starting to face a luxury problem: So many good things to write about, so many great articles submitted, it’s hard to make a choice. And during the last weeks, including a short family holiday and another trip to the US of A Cappella, free writing, editing and posting time was some kind of luxury, too. But here I am again and happy to be posting on at least a weekly basis from now on. We’ve got lots fine stuff (almost) ready to be published, e.g. a second Fringe a cappella report (about the pro groups’ performances), a personal experience report of a CVT student in Copenhagen, an interview with pioneering jazz choir conductor Bertrand Gröger (Jazzchor Freiburg) as well as series featuring  Leipzig A Cappella Festival interviews, a “Lo & Flo” Q&A done in 2011 and a new a cappella production series featuring US Vocal Mastering wizard and SoJam founder Dave Sperandio. Long story short: You’d better stay tuned, check the Vocal Blog Facebook and Twitter feed to not miss a single post.

Today, I want to introduce a very special, yes, a unique vocal music festival which takes place in Bayreuth, Germany from September 29th to October 2nd. “Sangeslust” features very popular and top-notch vocal music groups like The New VoxNorth (DEN), Camerata (BLR) and Lala (AUT). However what makes this event special are not its stars. What I particularly like is the successful implementation of event formats that attract new and long-time audiences:

  • Saturday, September 29th (18:30h), SERENATA BALKONIA: A selection of local and regional a cappella group open the festival with a “Balcony Serenade”. The location is spectacular: The newly appointed UNESCO world heritage Bayreuth Opera House (Yes, you’re right: Bayreuth is the home town of Richard Wagner, the very German composer).
  • Saturday, September 29th, (19:00h), RESTAURANT FESTIVAL: You make your reservation for a table at one on the five restaurants and while you have dinner, you can watch five groups performing acoustically. The funny thing is that the groups rotate, so you keep your seat and let the groups rush from mini-venue to mini-venue
  • Monday, October 1st, Ordenskirche Bayreuth (18:30h), VOKAL SAKRAL feat. Camerata from  Belarus. Every year there is one concert in a church, which of course attracts a different audience and helps spread the word about the festival outside the contemporary vocal music community
  • Tuesday, October 2nd, Bayreuth, Stadthalle (20:00h) A CAPPELLA NACHT. This is a real cult event, going ahead for the 16th time. Impressario Peter Martin Jacob (the sangeslust brain) presents an eclectic and spectacular programme (also touring other German cities): The New Vox North (DEN), beatbox soloist Robeat (GER), Camerata (BLR) and the co-founders and Bayreuth local heroes Sixpack (GER).

Sangeslust mastermind Peter Martin Jacob

Congratulations, Herr Jacob, for having for being brave enough to test new formats and venue ideas – keep doing the good work and have fun from next Saturday on. And all of you who are in Germany should check out the sangeslust homepage for tickets and more information.
